I can't believe I haven't posted this to the site yet! The Nom Nom Kitteh reminded me of this video:

Now we know what it sounds like when a kitten makes a yummy sound.
It's amazing to me that given the right situation and the passage of time, old home movies become priceless beacons - not only for family members, but for total strangers as well. Such is the case with these videos that were taken at Disneyland a year after the park opened.

Pictures of people and things you can always and/or only find at Wal-Mart:
Lots and lots of mullets
Many variations on the theme of "large people in small clothes"
A guy whose denim jacket has a web address that leads to here (be forewarned - he means well)
A goat?
A very large woman doing the splits
An old man with breast implants!

Using 20 YouTube videos, each of music in the key of B Flat (or of spoken word fitting the mood of the mournful, droning sounds of other videos), a unique experience has been created. Although in initial premise, it is not unlike Thru-You, the randomness of the project adds an element of 'danger' that the well-though-out Thru-You doesn't have.
This is a fascinating musical collaboration between three parties: the organizers Darren Solomon and Science For Girls; the artists and performers who create the literal pieces on the site; and us the viewers. We initiate the videos playing. We are randomly creating our own unique experience on the site.
Here are a few of my favorite videos. Play them all simultaneously to get the idea. See the link below to have access to all 20 videos.

I love the idea of taking something mistreated and/or abandoned and creating something beautiful and interesting with it. May I present to you: Guerrilla Gardening!

Influential People Of The World Unite! In This Painting!
0 comments Posted by Jake at Tuesday, August 25, 2009Three Chinese painters worked together to create a massive painting containing the people they felt had most influenced our modern world. You can hover your mouse over the individuals to see their name, or click on a person to get more information (usually a Wikipedia Article):
Abraham Lincoln
Einstein
Sigmund Freud
Jack Kevorkian
Bruce Lee
Napoleon Bonaparte
Michael Jordan
and dozens more
My favorite is the picture of a camel, the link of which leads to a list of "Celebrities that achieved success despite looking like a camel."

Interference (much like the beep/click noise you hear on speakers when a cell phone is about to ring) is instead turning this man's oven to 'High Broil'.
A splendiferous stop-motion Lego-brick tribute to the original NES.

Some guy on Twitter quoting all the ridiculous and funny things his 70-something dad says on a daily basis.
"You need to flush the toilet more than once...No, YOU, YOU specifically need to. You know what, use a different toilet. This is my toilet."
"Don't touch the bacon, it's not done yet. You let me handle the bacon, and i'll let you handle..what ever it is you do. I guess nothing."
"Your mother made a batch of meatballs last night. Some are for you, some are for me, but more are for me. Remember that. More. Me."
"Your brother brought his baby over this morning. He told me it could stand. It couldn't stand for shit. Just sat there. Big let down."
"The dog is not bored, it's a f*ing dog. It's not like he's waiting for me to give him a f*ing rubix cube. He's a g*d damned dog."
"Tennessee is nice. The first time I vomited was in tennessee, I think."
"The dog is an outside dog. You want an inside dog, you go get your own inside."
"My flight lands at 9:30 on Sunday...You want to watch what? What the f*ck is Mad Men? I'm a mad man if you don't pick me the hell up."
The best part is this guy has over 43,000 followers but he himself only follows LeVar Burton.

Fonolo - let someone else deal with that company's phone tree
0 comments Posted by Jake at Tuesday, August 25, 2009Tell the site what company you want to call, and it will do all the phone-tree surfing for you. It will call you once a real person is available on the other end. It can even record your call for you in case you talk to a real jerk - or if you just have bad memory.

A chimp watching magic tricks - great reactions
0 comments Posted by Jake at Tuesday, August 25, 2009From a Japanese TV show, a chimp watches magic tricks (illusions) and reacts as any adolescent primate would. I kept waiting for the chimp to go, uh, ape on the magician when he hid food from the chimp.

Find historical prices for any home in Salt Lake County. Most listings include photos of the dwelling just after construction, and often more recent photos. Items about the house are given grades by the county as well, from quality of materials used in parts of the home to the outward appearance. Square footage, Central air or not, and so on. They even have an 'effective year built' listed, with a more recent year in this field meaning the home is expected by the county to last longer than older 'effective year' homes. This site is excellent if you are looking into purchasing a specific house to see its history, and always fun to look up your house or the houses of your friends (or enemies).

Which animal would you expect to be violent against another animal? A fox or a rabbit?
Here's the fox:
Here's the rabbit:
The first video is particularly interesting in the fact that it is literally a quick brown fox jumping over a lazy dog... it reminds me of one of my favorite Roald Dahl books, Fantastic Mr. Fox, which is is being released as a Wes Anderson-directed film in just a few months!

$735,989,490,305.00 - $735,989,490,510.00 is the price listing for this shirt... how long before they fix the price?

Thanks to Wooties.net for this link!
Very funny British humor delivered in conjunction with archival wildlife footage. Friends of the program will likely already recognize "Alan! Al! Alan! Alan!" from the 5 minute mark of this video.
This reminds me of a tiny version of the stunt-car show they have down in Disney World. Just a little one-point parallel parking for ya.
Insanewiches: Sandwich Sculptures for the Modern Man
0 comments Posted by Jake at Wednesday, August 19, 2009If Iron Chef America has taught me anything, it's that food can't only be delicious, it must also be entertaining. And simultaneously prepared using a drill and a blast chiller.
Where Insanewiches fails on the blast chiller, it delivers on the entertaining; or at least really really weird.

Old footage set up by Walt himself of the construction of Disneyland. Time lapse, crane shots, other "behind the scenes" clips round out a wonderful set of videos about the creation of "The Happiest Place on Earth". The clips include commentary from three Disney employees who really know their stuff.

I can't get enough of these videos that turn normal speaking into a song. William Shatner's halting yet lyrical way of speaking lends itself to music so readily as to require little manipulation to create a masterpiece.
An actual product for sale, but apparently only in Japan, are a stack of post-it notes that look like a block of wood.

Everyone's favorite Techno enthusiast, the Techno Viking, seems to have met his match at the hands of Henry Rollins. Using a part of Rollins' tirade against techno music, a pretty decent techno sing has been created.
Old books with random objects used as bookmarks.
0 comments Posted by Jake at Tuesday, August 18, 2009Little personal touches and memories left behind in books by the people who have read them. Pressed flowers, handwritten messages and bookmarks - classical bookmarks or improvised - are left behind to be found later. An interesting and sometimes comical look at the relationship between people, the books they read, and the passage of time.

The family portraits that never existed, but should have. Happy group portraits of famous families from some of our favorite movies. I'm particularly fond of the Plaiviews from There Will Be Blood and the Torrences from The Shining.

I have many objections to this "bahda bahda" kind of A Capella. I prefer the much more natural sounds produced by Rockapella or The Blenders or even these guys. That said, it's kind of difficult to approximate instrumental sounds with no words to fill in the 'syllables' each note creates. Still "bahda bahda" is incorrectly accepted as a fill-in for these types of these situations, and is just lazy arranging. OK, off my soapbox, here's the stupid clip that is kinda funny and made me think of Kerry.

A little surreal, a little disconcerting, this stop-motion film is nonetheless entertaining.
Maybe this is more of note to me because I have always said my wife glows when she's happy, or just because I'm a sucker for the very excellent movie Stardust, but I was excited (although not surprised) to learn that humans emit measurable light in the visible spectrum.

Using a lot of paint and a lot of apparent spare time, this man has done an admirable job of blending in. Ironically, doing so has made him stand out - he's getting a lot of global attention for these images.

Both funny and interesting, this video uses a Dr. Seuss Alphabet book to teach basic Jamaican pronunciation.
Phone books as a sculpting medium is an interesting concept (and in the days of the internet, probably the best use of a phone book we have left). This artist creates busts of celebrities (and other non-celebrity works of art) using phone books and varying amounts of acrylic paint.
